From 11 November 2011 until 11 February 2014, Contemporary Literature Press has published 100 volumes of FW lexicography. These volumes are, in fact, part of one big project, which, for practical purposes, we have entitled “A Manual”. The list of these volumes can be found everywhere in the volumes. All the Lexicons can also be accessed, together with the full text of FW linearized, on Professor George Sandulescu’s site,

WHY Finnegans Wake is Finnegans Wake.
Homework for the Reader.

Not long ago, Contemporary Literature Press linearized and contextualized Clive Hart’s alphabetical list of Syllabifications (part two of his Concordance, pages 345-459). George Sandulescu chose the term Segmentation because it is the standard term of theoretical linguistics, and better describes Clive Hart’s chopping up of FW lexical items. Hart’s confessed aim had been to “put on show the English words.”

While dealing with Segmentation, we discovered that the chopping had far-reaching implications: the English words seemed to have a lot of non-English correspondents. All these items opened an unexpected field of further connections. Romanian is one of them. The reader will be amazed to discover that Hart’s English Segmentation leads to thousands of Romanian words in Joyce’s vocabulary. Sometimes the similarities are amazing. From nearly identical, we moved to remotely suggestive words, and produced 5,158 pages of possible Romanian lexical items that match Clive Hart’s cutting. Actually, Romanian-a Romance language-, has more than one approximation for each single English entry.

A few useful questions arise: Did Segmentation really put on show the English words? If Romanian can rival English in FW, how many more languages could possibly do the same? Does Joyce’s text encourage this kind of extensive listing?

Joyce’s imagination devised a net of multi-language possibilities. The present Romanian Lexicons invite the readers to fit their own language in, and see how it works. Eventually, someone may find an answer to the still enigmatic question: Can Finnegans Wake be translated? Did Joyce even think of translation in the first place?

All these fascinating thoughts arise from the mere cutting of the lexical units Joyce so carefully put together. They are an attempt to understand WHY Finnegans Wake is Finnegans Wake.

It Might Take Me Years: Mi-ar trebui un șir de ani

The Romanian PEN Club: An Anthology of Poetry

edited by Lidia Vianu.

(ISBN 978-606-8366-39-5, 169 pages)

The year 2013 begins for Contemporary Literature Press with an Anthology of poems written by members of the Romanian PEN Club. The selection was made by a veteran of Romanian poetry, Constantin Abăluță. The illustrations belong to a young artist, Cristina Ioana Young. Both poems and illustrations convey the essence of Romanian lyricism during communism and after. It would be difficult to find a more contemporary book than It Might Take Me Years. These poems are the perfect X-ray of what poetry has been in Romania since the 1950’s to this day: a web of confusion, creation and frustration.

Finnegans Wake Motifs I, II and III edited by C. George Sandulescu.

Contemporary Literature Press,
under The University of Bucharest, in conjunction with The British Council, and The Romanian Cultural Institute,

Announces the publication of

Finnegans Wake Motifs I, II and III
edited by C. George Sandulescu.

(ISBN 978-606-8366-30-2. ISBN 978-606-8366-32-6. ISBN 978-606-8366-34-0; with a total of 1,115 pages)

FW Motifs I (348pp), FW Motifs II (459pp), and FW Motifs III (310pp) is a single topic divided, for convenience, into three distinct volumes, totalling more than 3,000 entries. They are all launched here simultaneously. In addition to other advantages, the procedure gives each and every entry the characteristic of being open-ended.

Open-ended lexicography should be the topmost feature of FW Studies for as long as we are — honestly and sincerely — trying to work out what the book is really about. We start from the basic expectation that Joyce’s FW is about everything. At a time of controversial globalisation, when no literature is ‘national’ any more — a single literature of the European Union is, currency-wise, quite inconceivable — FW suddenly leaps, deliberately and voluntarily, into the unique position of being a piece of genuinely European fiction.

It is European genetically, having been conceived, and scribbled, in bits and pieces all over the place, Copenhagen included, with Dick Ellmann’s biography certifying it. It is European linguistically, with a neat list of 40 languages (Danish excluded!) inextricably tagged to its very Manuscript. And, finally, it is profoundly European in point of subject matter: the Motif is one of the three or four kinds of glue that have been consistently used to fuse it together. That is the reason why glue specialist Clive Hart discusses the Motif glue together with the Structure glue.

separa”. Pentru a înțelege textele scrise într-o limbă străină, trebuie să
cunoaștem mai întâi gramatica acelei limbi.
