“By documenting construction workers in present-day Bucharest, I tried to create a representation which alludes to the communist propaganda images. Since communist representation formulas are recognized as based on a discrepancy between reality and representation, this photographic series makes an indirect reference to the precarious social condition of workers in recent times. In the past the worker was glorified as part of the anti-intellectual communist ideology and in consequence was “beautified” at parades, in broadcast thematic dances and in news reports. My works take these strategies over, thus presenting aesthetized images which seem staged without being so.”

The relevance of this parallel resides in the fact that the type of capitalism developed after 1989 offers too little protection for the unprivileged. Another argument in favor of this comparison between communism and post-communist capitalism is the fact that Romania experienced two intense construction periods: one during the communist age (in the 1970s and 1980s) and the other in the last 10 years with the advent of capitalist development. Both these trends have been sustained with great disregard for the safety and retribution of construction workers.

Carmen Dobre (b. 1978) obtained a BFA from the National University of Arts in Bucharest in 2008 and is currently attending the Master of Photographic Studies at Leiden University, the Netherlands. Her preferred medium is photography and her thematic interest focuses on the representation of the human body as a carrier of social and cultural values.

Proiectele au fost selectate in urma Call-ului for projects lansat de Fundatia MORA in cursul anului 2009.

Rising High is the second exhibition out of the series of art projects we’re presenting this year in MORA Gallery. Painting, object, installation, video, performance and yet other photography are waiting their turn to be presented by Romanian and international artists. The projects were selected based on the proposals received through our open Call for Projects in 2009.

MORA 2010 is part of the series of activities dedicated to supporting Romanian visual arts and artists, through ensuring opportunities, through offering exhibitional space and mediating a dialogue between different artistic expressions, as part of a wider international art scene.
