Calypso Editions is about to publish its second important book, Anna Swir’s Building the Barricade & Other Poems. Available now for preorder from our website, Building the Barricade & Other Poems will be published on March 17, 2011.

Like America’s Walt Whitman working in the Union field hospitals during the Civil War, Poland’s Anna Swir worked as a nurse in the insurgent hospitals during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Her book of poems chronicling this experience, Building the Barricade, is extremely moving, and has not been available in print in English for three decades. In concert with the international 2011 Year of Milosz, Calypso Editions, in a fresh and stringent translation, will bring into English again selected poems from Swir’s seminal work.

Piotr Florczyk’s translation does justice to a book which is of deep importance to anyone studying Polish poetry, the Holocaust, WWII history, feminist poetry, and the literature of wartime. We also believe Swir’s work is an excellent resource for veteran students and faculty looking for literary models. Anna Swir created an entirely new way of writing about war experience, and her genius has not yet been fully appreciated.

The release of our first title, Tolstoy’s How Much Land Does a Man Need, translated by Boris Dralyuk, was reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement in December, 2010:

“It is hard to imagine any of the large publishers devoting this much time and space to a single short story, so we should be grateful to Calypso, a new press run collaboratively by writers and translators, for this excellent edition of a small but important work.”

Please forward this letter to a friend and order a copy for yourself and one as a gift for your favorite serious reader. We’d really love to hear from you. Tell us what you think. We are here to publish great books, listen to you, and continue building an international community of readers and writers.

Our Sincerest Regards,
Beth & Piotr

About Calypso Editions
Founded in 2010 by eight writers based in various U.S. cities—from remote Alaska to New York City and several cities in between—Calypso Editions was created under the belief that a 21st-century press will best serve the literary community and reading public as a group of writer-publishers that celebrate literary excellence. As a decentralized, non-profit, shared-work literary press that provides an alternative for writers and readers of poetry and fiction, Calypso Editions publishes a minimum of four books annually.  For more information about us, our publishing plans, to purchase our books, or to make a donation, please visit www.calypsoeditions.org.
