Like America\u2019s Walt Whitman working in the Union field hospitals during the Civil War, Poland\u2019s Anna Swir worked as a nurse in the insurgent hospitals during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Her book of poems chronicling this experience, Building the Barricade, is extremely moving, and has not been available in print in English for three decades. In concert with the international 2011 Year of Milosz, Calypso Editions, in a fresh and stringent translation, will bring into English again selected poems from Swir’s seminal work.

\nPiotr Florczyk\u2019s translation does justice to a book which is of deep importance to anyone studying Polish poetry, the Holocaust, WWII history, feminist poetry, and the literature of wartime. We also believe Swir\u2019s work is an excellent resource for veteran students and faculty looking for literary models. Anna Swir created an entirely new way of writing about war experience, and her genius has not yet been fully appreciated. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\nThe release of our first title, Tolstoy\u2019s How Much Land Does a Man Need, translated by Boris Dralyuk, was reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement in December, 2010:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is hard to imagine any of the large publishers devoting this much time and space to a single short story, so we should be grateful to Calypso, a new press run collaboratively by writers and translators, for this excellent edition of a small but important work.\u201d<\/p>\n
