Prin editarea \u00een facsimil a volumului Proverbs in Ten Languages de Emma Mawr, publicat ini\u021bial \u00een anul 1885, Contemporary Literature Press identific\u0103 \u00eenceputurile adev\u0103rate ale cercet\u0103rii \u0219tiin\u021bifice solide ale anglisticii rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti, care se situeaz\u0103 \u00een timp la mai pu\u021bin de zece ani dup\u0103 realizarea independen\u021bei na\u021bionale de sub domina\u021bia turc\u0103, prin Tratatul de Independen\u021b\u0103 semnat la 21 mai 1877.

\nMrs. E.B. Mawr a fost so\u021bie de medic. Dr. Barker John Mawr, de la Londra, a fost invitat \u00een 1858 \u00een Rom\u00e2nia de c\u0103tre guvernul rom\u00e2n; a func\u021bionat mult\u0103 vreme ca medic la Spitalul Br\u00e2ncovenesc \u0219i la azilul Doamna B\u0103la\u0219a. (Este men\u021bionat \u00een Dic\u021bionarul contimporanilor de Dimitrie R. Rosetti.) Emma Mawr a devenit o apropiat\u0103 a reginei Carmen Sylva, celebr\u0103 nu numai ca scriitoare, dar \u0219i ca sor\u0103 de caritate, \u00eentotdeauna \u00een mijlocul r\u0103ni\u021bilor de r\u0103zboi. Autoarea a murit la Bucure\u0219ti, la v\u00e2rsta de optzeci de ani.<\/p>\nPrefa\u021ba Emmei Mawr la aceast\u0103 carte men\u021bioneaz\u0103 ajutorul nepre\u021buit al unui \u201efoarte cunoscut Filolog \u0219i Lexicograf\u201d rom\u00e2n. E de notat c\u0103 a doua limb\u0103 \u00een care sunt redate proverbele este chiar limba rom\u00e2n\u0103. Rigurozitatea cu care sunt notate proverbele \u00een toate cele zece limbi este cu totul remarcabil\u0103. Cartea aceasta este cu siguran\u021b\u0103 rodul muncii de mul\u021bi ani a unor autori din umbr\u0103, cu vaste cuno\u0219tin\u021be de lexicografie \u0219i folclor.<\/p>\n
Dup\u0103 p\u0103rerea editorilor, cuv\u00e2ntul \u201eFilolog\u201d \u00een Prefa\u021ba doamnei Mawr cuprinde o referin\u021b\u0103 tacit\u0103 la Moses Gaster, expulzat de Ion Br\u0103tianu chiar \u00een 1885 \u2014 anul public\u0103rii Proverbelor. Stabilit \u00een Anglia, el a fost imediat numit Profesor la Oxford. Lexicograful despre care vorbe\u0219te autoarea ar fi Laz\u0103r S\u0103ineanu: dup\u0103 publicarea celebrului Dic\u021bionar universal, ap\u0103rut \u00een peste \u0219ase edi\u021bii \u00eentre 1896 \u0219i 1930, el a p\u0103r\u0103sit Rom\u00e2nia \u00een 1900, stabilindu-se \u00een Fran\u021ba. \u00cen c\u00e2\u021biva ani a publicat la Paris cel mai bun studiu despre Fran\u00e7ois Rabelais, consultat foarte des p\u00e2n\u0103 \u00een ziua de azi.<\/p>\n
F\u0103r\u0103 s\u0103-\u0219i dea seama, poate, E.B. Mawr a g\u00e2ndit limbajul European ca pe un tot unitar. Ea afirm\u0103 c\u0103 a c\u0103utat s\u0103 pun\u0103 al\u0103turi \u00een cartea ei \u201eexprimarea foarte apropiat\u0103 a g\u00e2ndirii \u00een mai multe \u021b\u0103ri\u201d. Cele zece limbi alese de autoare sunt: engleza (totdeauna prima), rom\u00e2na (totdeauna a doua), franceza, germana, italiana, spaniola, olandeza, daneza, portugheza \u0219i latina. Dac\u0103 citim aceste proverbe cu un ochi atent la migra\u021biile sunetelor \u00een limbile europene, avem \u00een acest foarte mic volum, a c\u0103rui importan\u021b\u0103 nu \u021bine de num\u0103rul paginilor, o epifanie a Turnului Babel. Adic\u0103, \u00een\u021belegem istoria modific\u0103rilor fonetice, ortografice, lexicale la care altfel nu avem acces. \u00cen\u021belegem, poate, altfel \u0219i ideea de Pia\u021b\u0103 Comun\u0103 European\u0103.<\/p>\n
Celor care se sperie de alinierea at\u00e2t de impun\u0103toare a zece limbi una dup\u0103 alta, le recomand\u0103m s\u0103 \u00eenceap\u0103 citirea acestei c\u0103r\u021bi cu Indexul de la sf\u00e2r\u0219it, care func\u021bioneaz\u0103 ca instrument didactic auxiliar pentru \u00een\u021belegerea \u00eentregii c\u0103r\u021bi. De remarcat faptul extraordinar c\u0103, \u00eenc\u0103 din 1885, autoarea a v\u0103zut clar evolu\u021bia lingvistic\u0103 a celor dou\u0103 secole urm\u0103toare, secoul XX \u0219i secolul XXI, \u00een care limba englez\u0103 devine foarte repede limb\u0103 mondial\u0103. V\u0103 atragem aten\u021bia asupra faptului c\u0103 aceasta a fost cronologic prima carte multilingv\u0103 scris\u0103 la Bucure\u0219ti \u00ceN BAZ\u0102 ENGLEZ\u0102.<\/p>\n
Cel care a scris o alt\u0103 carte \u00een Standard Average European a fost James Joyce \u00eensu\u0219i, atunci c\u00e2nd a creat Finnegans Wake, lucrare scris\u0103 vreme de \u0219aptesprezece ani, \u00eentre 1922 \u0219i 1939, unde nu e vorba doar de zece limbi europene, ci de patruzeci de limbi mondiale.<\/p>\n

Proverbs in Ten Languages,
\nby Mrs. E.B. Mawr,
\nedited in facsimile by C. George Sandulescu and Lidia Vianu.<\/p>\n(ISBN 978-606-8366-10-4)<\/p>\n
Contemporary Literature Press issues in facsimile Mrs. E.B. Mawr\u2019s Proverbs in Ten Languages (initially published in 1885), in an attempt to trace the beginnings of real, solid scientific research in the field of English Studies in Romania. It all started no later than eight years after the country had gained national independence from the Turks on 21 May 1877.<\/p>\n
Emma Mawr was the wife of Dr. Barker John Mawr, whom the Romanian Government had invited to come to Bucharest from London in 1858. He worked as a physician to the end of his life for the hospitals Br\u00e2ncovenesc and Doamna B\u0103la\u0219a. (Cf in Dimitrie R. Rosetti\u2019s Dictionary of Contemporary Personalities). The Romanian Queen Carmen Sylva, famous not only as a writer, but also for her efforts to help those wounded on the battlefield, worked as a hospital nurse and knew the author fairly well. Mrs. Mawr died in Bucharest at the age of eighty.<\/p>\n
In her Preface to these Proverbs, Emma Mawr mentions the \u201cinvaluable assistance\u201d of a Romanian \u201cwell-known Philologist and Lexicographer\u201d in the making of the book. It is easy to notice that Romanian is the second language in the listing of proverbs. This listing in all ten languages is remarkably rigorous. The book seems to have behind it years of work on the part of scholars well conversant with lexicography and folklore, whose name the author avoids to reveal, for reasons we can only suspect.<\/p>\n
In consequence, the Editors have a strong impression that those who helped Emma Mawr may have been Moses Gaster and Laz\u0103r S\u0103ineanu. Moses Gaster was expelled from Romania by Ion Br\u0103tianu in 1885, the very year the Proverbs were published. He subsequently settled in England, and became an Oxford Professor overnight. Eleven years after the publication of the Proverbs, Laz\u0103r S\u0103ineanu published his well-known Dic\u021bionar Universal, reissued six times between 1896 and 1930. He left Romania in 1900, and settled down in France. Before several years had elapsed, he had published there the best, most frequently used study of Fran\u00e7ois Rabelais to date.<\/p>\n
Possibly without being aware of it, E.B. Mawr treated the European languages she chose as if they were one single language. In her words, the proverbs published by her represented \u201cthe same expression of thought in different countries\u201d. The ten languages E.B. Mawr selected were: English (always first on the list), Romanian (always at the top, immediately afterwards), French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Portuguese, and Latin. When one reads this small book, the importance of which well exceeds its size, one cannot fail to be fascinated by the migration of sounds and meaning, quite suggestive of the Tower of Babel. These Proverbs in ten languages reveal changes in pronunciation, spelling and meaning that lead to a new understanding of the European Union.<\/p>\n
Readers, who feel shy in the presence of ten languages, might find it useful to begin by reading our final Index, which we have added as auxiliary teaching material, meant to facilitate the understanding of the whole book. It is remarkable that, as far back as 1885, the author almost predicted the linguistic evolution of the following two centuries, during which English has risen fast to the status of World Language. These Proverbs in Ten Languages are, chronologically speaking, the first multilingual book in BASE ENGLISH published in Bucharest.<\/p>\n
Another book that happens to be written in Standard Average European is Finnegans Wake; it took James Joyce seventeen years to write it, from 1922 to 1939. That book features not ten, but forty languages of the world.<\/p>\n
