And what happens today, in the AfterMode, is what writers have managed to hold on to after the Joyce Flood.

Lidia Vianu’s book addresses young and old students of present day literature. It examines the survival of the story in English fiction today. The game with the narrative proper and with its traditional tools are many and diverse.

The novelists this book focuses on are the following: Peter Ackroyd, Martin Amis, Julian Barnes, Malcolm Bradbury, A.S. Byatt, Angela Carter, Tracy Chevalier, Jonathan Coe, Helen Fielding, Laura Hird, Kazuo Ishiguro, Hanif Kureishi, Doris Lessing, David Lodge, Ian McEwan, Timothy Mo, Salman Rushdie, Graham Swift, Rose Tremain, and Jeanette Winterson.

They are all indebted to the master-player: his Finnegans Wake has already been scrutinized by Contemporary Literature Press in three Lexicons so far – Romanian, German and Scandinavian.

The AfterMode has one aim alone: to analyse the story with simple tools. It avoids the ready-made coinages of 2012 critical jargon. It is written in „demotic” English. The point it is trying to make is that, while Joyce and Eliot and Ezra Pound could afford games with the Word, the literary critic needs to respect his reader’s language and understanding.

The volume The AfterMode. Present Day English Fiction, by Lidia Vianu will be officially launched on 1 February 2012, but it is available for consultation and downloading on receipt of this Press Release, at the following internet address:

http://editura.mttlc.ro/Lidia.Vianu-The-AfterMode.html

You are kindly invited to visit the Contemporary Literature Press Website at http://editura.mttlc.ro/.
