In short, we must know how to make ourselves understood in a very subtle manner to people living in the place where the given language is being spoken. This is what Daniela Sorea’s book of Pragmatics focuses on: how to fit words into a particular context, how to translate what we mean to say into sentences that will make sense in a variety of ways to speakers of English. Pragmatics is not a branch of linguistics, for it is first and foremost a branch of semiotics. As a subsidiary of that, language implies so much more than just words…

C.G. Sandulescu’s Introduction to this book of Pragmatics published by Contemporary Literature Press tells the readers that Roman Jakobson’s Scheme of Communication (Sender-Message-Receiver + CODE + CHANNEL) simplified life more than considerably for the average teacher of English as a second language. But Sandulescu also adds that there is a risk attached to the idea of communication as a scheme: it consists in one’s becoming excessively restrictive, and even rigid in one’s restrictiveness. With N. Chomsky, for instance, History, Etymology, Literature, Psychology, Sociology and all the rest are not taken into account. Langue gets so free from civilisation that it becomes more than easily FORMALISED as an aim in itself.

Dr. Daniela Sorea is a member of the English Language and Literature Department of the University of Bucharest, as a Reader. She follows in the footsteps of Paul Grice. With his essay ‘Logic and Conversation’, Grice changed thinking on language in the early 1970’s once and for all. Sorea’s book ultimately examines the indestructible connection that exists between language studies, on the one hand, and literature studies, on the other hand. She illustrates her theory with varied contemporary texts: from books to popular magazines, from films to Television series. Her approach is linguistic, and also broadly „cultural”. She considers both statement and understatement. As she herself puts it, she investigates „how humans adapt to language and how language adapts to humans”. And, moreover, she always has in view the teachers of English as a second language. Lidia Vianu

Pragmatics, by Daniela Sorea is formally launched on Tuesday 18 September 2012.
