The year 2013 begins for Contemporary Literature Press with an Anthology of poems written by members of the Romanian PEN Club. The selection was made by a veteran of Romanian poetry, Constantin Ab\u0103lu\u021b\u0103. The illustrations belong to a young artist, Cristina Ioana Young. Both poems and illustrations convey the essence of Romanian lyricism during communism and after. It would be difficult to find a more contemporary book than It Might Take Me Years. These poems are the perfect X-ray of what poetry has been in Romania since the 1950’s to this day: a web of confusion, creation and frustration.
\n
\nThe careful reader cannot fail to notice a drama of survival in this book: the survival of the intellectual in the dark Orwellian years, as well as his condition now, twenty years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, if a „fall” it was. It might indeed take years to explain what censorship did – or does – to the poet’s mind. One fact appears clearly in this book: in spite of harsh recent history, the Romanian poet has fought bravely for the „dialect of the tribe”. Romanian intellectuals owe him their freedom of the mind, partly at least. <\/p>\n

We are publishing here poems by 39 poets, all born between the years 1931 and 1967. The texts have been translated by 21 English poets, together with the graduate students of the MA Programme for the Translation of the Contemporary Literary Text, under Bucharest University. This is more than a book: it is a door open into the privacy of minds. The texts published here say just this: „I write, therefore I am.” They may look like picturesque pastimes to the outsider, but they are in fact a Memento of the fight of the Romanian intellectual with the political circumstances of his century. <\/p>\n

Public\u0103m la \u00eenceput de an 2013 prima antologie de poeme scris\u0103 de membrii PEN Clubului rom\u00e2n. Selec\u021bia poemelor a fost f\u0103cut\u0103 de poetul Constantin Ab\u0103lu\u021b\u0103. Ilustra\u021biile apar\u021bin Cristinei Ioana Young. Versurile \u0219i imaginile la un loc transmit cititorului lirismul rom\u00e2nesc specific, reac\u021bia scriitorilor antologa\u021bi la anii comunismului \u0219i la ceea ce tr\u0103im acum. O carte mai actual\u0103 ca It Might Take Me Years \/ Mi-ar trebui un \u0219ir de ani e greu de \u00eenchipuit. Poemele acestea iau pulsul \u0219i fac radiografia derutei creatoare din anii 1950 \u00eencoace, dar ele arat\u0103 cititorului atent \u0219i \u00een ce fel a supravie\u021buit intelectualul rom\u00e2n, \u0219i cum se mai simte el acum, la dou\u0103zeci de ani de la c\u0103derea (?) cortinei de fier. Ar fi, \u00eentr-adev\u0103r, nevoie de un lung \u0219ir de ani s\u0103 explic\u0103m ce a \u00eensemnat cenzura \u0219i ce s-a mai \u00eent\u00e2mplat cu ea. Poetul rom\u00e2n nu este o specie pe cale de dispari\u021bie, \u00een ciuda istoriei recente a Rom\u00e2niei. A\u0219a cum spunea T.S. Eliot, el p\u0103streaz\u0103 vie „limba tribului”. <\/p>\n

Dup\u0103 ce citim aceste versuri, aparent un zbor afar\u0103 din cotidian, \u00een\u021belegem c\u00e2t de mult datoreaz\u0103 intelectualul rom\u00e2n poe\u021bilor na\u021biei. Poezia a fost, \u00een anii dictaturii comuniste, o evadare a elitei. \u00cen acest moment, pentru c\u0103 evadarea este \u00eenc\u0103 necesar\u0103, observ\u0103m \u00een volumul de fa\u021b\u0103 c\u0103 ea este un protest la \u00eendem\u00e2na tuturor. Vorba unei vechi zicale, „rom\u00e2nul e n\u0103scut poet”. <\/p>\n

Citind versurile acestor 39 de poe\u021bi, n\u0103scu\u021bi \u00eentre anii 1931 \u0219i 1967, intr\u0103m \u00een intimitatea fiec\u0103ruia dintre ei. Traducerile apar\u021bin unui grup de 21 de poe\u021bi englezi, care au lucrat \u00eempreun\u0103 cu studen\u021bii Masteratului pentru Traducerea Textului Literar Contemporan (Universitatea din Bucure\u0219ti). Acolo unde cititorul de limb\u0103 englez\u0103 poate apreciaz\u0103 pitorescul situa\u021biei, cititorul rom\u00e2n se va sim\u021bi acas\u0103 la el, ca unul care a tr\u0103it cot la cot cu poezia, chiar \u00een timp ce via\u021ba cotidian\u0103 \u00eel ataca din toate direc\u021biile. <\/p>\n

Public\u0103m, a\u0219adar, aceast\u0103 antologie, ca ghid pentru cititorul str\u0103in de Rom\u00e2nia, dar mai ales ca Memento pentru iubitorul de poezie rom\u00e2n. <\/p>\n
