The best histories of English literature have been written by non-English authors. We are now publishing two such books, both coming from Germany.<br \/>\n This is not unlike the Grammars of the English language: remember Otto Jespersen, A Modern English Grammar on Historical Principles in seven parts (1909-1949); Etsko Kruisinga, A Handbook of Present-Day English (1909-1932); Hendrik Poutsma, A Grammar of Modern English in five volumes (1904-1929); Reinard Zandvoort, A Handbook of English Grammar (1945); Jan Svartvig, Leon Levi\u021bchi&#8230;<br \/>\n We are, then, publishing these two histories of literature in an attempt to be of use, as Sefton Delmer himself puts it on the cover of his own book, to &#8222;schools, universities, and private students.&#8221; All this material is meant for both classroom and individual use.<\/p>\n<p>The two histories of English Literature, edited by Lidia Vianu, are formally launched on Wednesday 20 November 2013.
