The Irish Trojan Horse<\/center><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the year 2014,\u00a0Contemporary Literature Press<\/i>\u00a0continues the James Joyce Lexicography Series started in November 2011. The present 19 volumes contextualize and linearize the second part of Frances Boldereff’s\u00a0Reading Finnegans Wake<\/i>, initially published as far back as 1959. Our series focuses on Boldereff’s own obsessions as to what the reader might recognize time and again in Joyce’s last text: HCE, Dear Dirty Dublin, Jonathan Swift and his Stella, Chapelizod, 1132, Finn MacCool… Boldereff explained that she was interested in „words of Irish reference only”, words which could „establish the\u00a0Irish<\/i>\u00a0identity”. She made a point of never referring to „Joyce’s meaning”. As she herself put it, „Joyce has not written a history, nor a study-book of any kind; he is conveying his wonderful excitement over his country.”<\/p>\n

According to Frances Boldereff, then, James Joyce evokes Ireland emotionally: she chose Irishness as a possible key to\u00a0Finnegans Wake<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Her choice of Ireland could hardly go wrong.<\/p>\n

Her explanation of this choice, however, does not sound quite right.<\/p>\n

Finnegans Wake<\/i>\u00a0research began a few years after Joyce’s death. CLP has made most of it available to its readers:<\/p>\n

In 1944, Joseph Campbell and Henry Morton Robinson published\u00a0A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake<\/i>. The year 1959 brought no less than four books at once: Boldereff, James Atherton with a\u00a0Study of Literary Allusions<\/i>, Matthew Hodgart and Mabel Worthington with\u00a0Song<\/i>, and Richard Ellmann with James Joyce’s life. In 1962 and 1963, Clive Hart published both\u00a0Structure and Motif<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0A Concordance to Finnegans Wake<\/i>. After the year 1965 there was an explosion of Lexicons: among others, Dounia Bunis Christiani came with\u00a0Scandinavian Elements<\/i>\u00a0(1965), while Helmut Bonheim published his\u00a0Lexicon of the German\u00a0<\/i>(1967). Adaline Glasheen compiled a\u00a0Census<\/i>\u00a0of the characters (1977). In 1978, Louis Mink published his\u00a0Gazetteer<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Boldereff noticed one essential fact, which she never carried to an ultimate conclusion, though: the harder Joyce fought to become a citizen of Europe and a speaker of all languages, the more acutely his small Ireland stuck to every fibre of his mind. Ireland was the one, the inescapable Earworm of Joyce’s intelligence: it haunted him in spite of himself, at all times.<\/p>\n

We are now publishing Boldereff’s Glosses because we feel they are pointing the reader in the right direction: Earworms\u00a0are<\/i>\u00a0a possible Trojan horse.<\/p>\n

La \u00eenceput de an 2014,\u00a0Contemporary Literature Press<\/i>\u00a0\u00ee\u0219i continu\u0103 seria lexicografic\u0103 James Joyce deschis\u0103 \u00een noiembrie 2011. Public\u0103m acum 19 volume care contextualizeaz\u0103 \u0219i linearizeaz\u0103 partea a doua a c\u0103r\u021bii\u00a0Reading Finnegans Wake<\/i>, publicat\u0103 de Frances Boldereff \u00eenc\u0103 din anul 1959. Ne concentr\u0103m asupra numelor de persoane, locuri \u0219i incidente pe care autoarea le identific\u0103 repetat \u00een ultimul text scris de Joyce: HCE, Dear Dirty Dublin, Jonathan Swift \u0219i Stella, Chapelizod, 1132, Finn MacCool…<\/p>\n

Boldereff anun\u021b\u0103 din prefa\u021b\u0103 c\u0103 nu caut\u0103 dec\u00e2t „cuvintele legate de Irlanda”, cuvintele care definesc o „identitate irlandez\u0103”. Ea declar\u0103 de la bun \u00eenceput c\u0103 nu caut\u0103 alte „\u00een\u021belesuri” \u00een Joyce, \u0219i \u00eencheie cu explica\u021bia urm\u0103toare: „Joyce nu a scris o istorie ori un manual; el \u0219i-a comunicat afec\u021biunea real\u0103 pentru \u021bara sa.”<\/p>\n

Frances Boldereff consider\u0103 c\u0103\u00a0Finnegans Wake<\/i>\u00a0este o evocare afectiv\u0103 a Irlandei: ea se folose\u0219te, a\u0219adar, de spiritul irlandez pentru a p\u0103trunde \u00een textul lui Joyce.<\/p>\n

Alegerea Irlandei este f\u0103r\u0103 \u00eendoial\u0103 o idee bun\u0103.<\/p>\n

Explica\u021bia acestei alegeri, \u00eens\u0103, nu o duce pe autoare prea departe.<\/p>\n

Studii critice despre ultima carte scris\u0103 de Joyce au \u00eenceput s\u0103 apar\u0103 la doar c\u00e2\u021biva ani dup\u0103 moartea lui. CLP a prelucrat pe r\u00e2nd pentru cititorii ei informa\u021bii din volumele cele mai importante:<\/p>\n

Boldereff a descoperit un lucru esen\u021bial, chiar dac\u0103 nu a mers cu concluziile suficient de departe: \u00een ciuda dorin\u021bei aprinse a lui Joyce de a fi cet\u0103\u021bean al lumii \u00eentregi \u0219i de a-i cunoa\u0219te toate limbile, Irlanda a r\u0103mas p\u00e2n\u0103 la moarte spa\u021biul lui definitoriu. Irlanda a fost refrenul obsedant al vie\u021bii lui interioare \u0219i, implicit, al scrisului lui. Nu s-a eliberat de ea niciodat\u0103, indiferent \u00een ce spa\u021biu s-ar fi aflat, de\u0219i a p\u0103r\u0103sit-o de foarte t\u00e2n\u0103r.<\/p>\n

Acesta este motivul pentru care public\u0103m \u00een context prelucrarea linearizat\u0103 a p\u0103r\u021bii a doua din cartea lui Frances Boldereff: ea indic\u0103 o direc\u021bie de cercetare important\u0103. Obsesiile unui scriitor spun multe despre opera lui.
