George Sandulescu chose the term Segmentation because it is the standard term of theoretical linguistics, and better describes Clive Hart’s chopping up of FW lexical items. Hart’s confessed aim had been to „put on show the English words.”

While dealing with Segmentation, we discovered that the chopping had far-reaching implications: the English words seemed to have a lot of non-English correspondents. All these items opened an unexpected field of further connections. Romanian is one of them. The reader will be amazed to discover that Hart’s English Segmentation leads to thousands of Romanian words in Joyce’s vocabulary. Sometimes the similarities are amazing. From nearly identical, we moved to remotely suggestive words, and produced 5,158 pages of possible Romanian lexical items that match Clive Hart’s cutting. Actually, Romanian-a Romance language-, has more than one approximation for each single English entry.

A few useful questions arise: Did Segmentation really put on show the English words? If Romanian can rival English in FW, how many more languages could possibly do the same? Does Joyce’s text encourage this kind of extensive listing?

Joyce’s imagination devised a net of multi-language possibilities. The present Romanian Lexicons invite the readers to fit their own language in, and see how it works. Eventually, someone may find an answer to the still enigmatic question: Can Finnegans Wake be translated? Did Joyce even think of translation in the first place?

All these fascinating thoughts arise from the mere cutting of the lexical units Joyce so carefully put together. They are an attempt to understand WHY Finnegans Wake is Finnegans Wake.

C.
