A young lecturer at the Department of English of the University of Bucharest, C. George Sandulescu, presently living in the Principality of Monaco, had brought Miriam Allott’s book from England. He was going to translate it. With Editor Antonaeta Ralian, he signed a contract for the book to be published at Editura pentru Literatură Universală in Bucharest. He also signed a contract for Henry James’s The Ambassadors to be published in his translation. He hoped it might be the beginning of a new Chair in Bucharest: a Chair of the Theory of the Novel. When he left Romania, both contracts and his plan fell through.

A former student—while in England—of Arnold Kettle, who was a major specialist in the Theory of the Novel, Sandulescu still considers that direction to be of utmost importance in literary criticism. Theory spells professionalism. It brings pondering distance from the immediacy of the creator’s approach.

Novelists on the Novel is a road not taken—in Romania. By publishing it, we are trying to help Romanian teachers of literature. We are also offering students and critics both an image of le temps perdu and a possible road towards le temps retrouvé.

Lidia Vianu

Miriam Allott, Novelists on the Novel edited by C.
