Every new translation has been like a new face. It happened with the numerous translations of the Romanian poet Mihail Eminescu into English. It is now happening-again- with a translation of William Shakespeare into Romanian.

Contemporary Literature Press is publishing a new translation of the Sonnets. It has been made by an engineer who is at his first published book. Radu Ștefănescu translates with rhyme, rhythm, and meaning. All translations are both an extension of the original text into another language, and a limitation of it, caused by the translator’s own ideas about that text. Radu Ștefănescu translates, but he also rewrites. His Romanian version of the Sonnets is an act of interpretation, and one of creation at the same time. Readers are invited to decide for themselves the order in which the two attributes come. One may easily disagree with the translator, and yet, in spite of it, reading this book will certainly prove a captivating experience.

William Shakespeare’s Sonnets, translated into Romanian by Radu Ștefănescu, is formally launched on Monday 9 March 2015.
