Open to translators at the beginning of their careers, this contest invites translations in three genres: poetry, fiction, and\u2014a new category this year\u2014literary nonfiction. The winner and runner-up of each category will walk away with 1,000 USD and 500 USD respectively.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to winning some serious prize money, they will also be featured in our April 2016 issue, joining an exceptional roster of translators published in our pages, including J.M. Coetzee, Lydia Davis, Susan Bernofsky, Robert Chandler, Ros Schwartz, Daniel Hahn, Pierre Joris, Rosmarie Waldrop and Howard Goldblatt.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are thrilled to announce the panel of experts judging this second installment:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"autoscale\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asymptotejournal.com\/images\/support\/H.jpg\" alt=\"\" align=\"left\" \/><b>Michael Hofmann<\/b> (Poetry) was born in Germany, and grew up in England, Scotland, Austria and the US. He has published six books of poetry, including <i>Nights in the Iron Hotel<\/i>, <i>Acrimony<\/i> and a <i>Selected Poems<\/i>, winning a Cholmondeley Award, the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, and an English Arts Council grant. In addition to numerous prose translations (all from German), he has translated volumes from Durs Gr\u00fcnbein (<i>Ashes for Breakfast<\/i>), G\u00fcnter Eich (<i>Angina Days<\/i>), and Gottfried Benn (<i>Impromptus<\/i>). He reviews for <i>Poetry<\/i> and the <i>London Review of Books<\/i>, and has brought out two critical collections: <i>Behind the Lines<\/i> (2001) and <i>Where Have You Been?<\/i> (2014) and introduced and edited the anthology <i>Twentieth Century German Poetry<\/i> (2006). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Deutsche Akademie der K\u00fcnste, and has taught at the University of Florida for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"autoscale\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asymptotejournal.com\/images\/support\/O.jpg\" alt=\"\" align=\"left\" \/><b>Ottilie Mulzet<\/b> (Fiction) translates from Hungarian and Mongolian. Her translation of L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai\u2019s <i>Seiobo There Below<\/i> won the Best Translated Book Award in 2014, and in 2015, she shared the Translator\u2019s Prize with poet and fellow translator George Szirtes for L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai\u2019s lifetime achievement Man Booker International Prize. Forthcoming translations include: <i>Destruction and Sorrow beneath the Heavens<\/i>, by L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai (Seagull Books, 2016), <i>The Dispossessed<\/i>, by Szil\u00e1rd Borb\u00e9ly (HarperCollins, 2016), and <i>Lazarus<\/i>, by G\u00e1bor Schein (Seagull Books, 2017). In addition, she is completing a dissertation about Mongolian riddles, and a book of translations of Mongolian Buddhist legends.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"autoscale\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asymptotejournal.com\/images\/support\/M.jpg\" alt=\"\" align=\"left\" \/><b>Margaret Jull Costa<\/b> (Nonfiction) has been a literary translator for nearly thirty years and has translated works by such writers as E\u00e7a de Queiroz, Jos\u00e9 Saramago and Javier Mar\u00edas. She has won various prizes, most recently the Marsh Award for Children\u2019s Fiction in Translation for Bernardo Atxaga\u2019s <i>The Adventures of Shola<\/i>. In 2013, she was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and in 2014, was awarded an OBE for services to literature. In 2015, she was given an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Leeds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing chosen as a runner-up in <i>Asymptote<\/i>\u2019s &#8216;Close Approximations&#8217; instantly opened up new opportunities for publishing exciting new translations and collaborating with editors at other journals. These fresh opportunities bear witness to <i>Asymptote<\/i>\u2019s remarkable profile: editors know that <i>Asymptote<\/i> is the place to look for up-and-coming translations across the globe. We will ask you to furnish this statement if your work is selected.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 Works enter the public domain generally 50 to 76 years after the author\u2019s death, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries%27_copyright_lengths\">depending on the country<\/a> where the work was published. The onus is on you to verify if the work in question has indeed entered the public domain, if it comes to that. We will not entertain any queries with regard to the copyright status of a work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 We ask that submissions be limited to translations of writers who have yet to appear widely in English but are generally available in their native tongue. As an example, Sappho is considered widely published in English, even if freshly translated. In contrast, an author with only a small fraction of his or her work published in English translation (or none at all) would be a perfect candidate for the contest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 Translations must be into English, but may come from any language besides English. Although we especially welcome contemporary work translated from underrepresented languages, neither the work\u2019s original language or its contemporaneity will be a factor in the judging.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 Self-translations are not permitted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 Translations must not have been previously published. \u201cPublication\u201d here includes appearances in limited-circulation or defunct print publications\/online outlets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 Simultaneous submissions are not allowed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 If a translation is slated for publication in a title that is forthcoming after April 2016, it may be submitted for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 Up to two entries are allowed per individual for poetry and up to three entries each are allowed per individual for fiction and nonfiction. If submitting more than one entry, please upload each as a separate Submittable submission (Note that the contest fee will apply to each).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 Multiple submissions across different genres are allowed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 Collaborative translations are allowed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tab\">\u2022 Preference will be given to translators who are early in their careers.
