They part and pop, as fire does, in play and on the planes of prairied minds. The\u00a0<em>tanpopo<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0<em>popo<\/em>\u00a0is the dandelion\u2019s lion, but it is also the pop of Pop-Rocks, the pip of pomegranate, the chugga chugga of the choo-choo. A train engineer is a\u00a0<em>popo-ya<\/em>,\u00a0<em>shushu-popo<\/em>\u00a0the child\u2019s word for locomotive,\u00a0<em>popo-popo-popo<\/em>\u00a0the sound a train makes moving across an empty field. A 1603 Jesuit Japanese dictionary lists\u00a0<em>poppo<\/em>\u00a0as \u201cthe manner in which steam or fire rises.\u201d But in Japanese,\u00a0<em>tanpopo<\/em>\u00a0is not onomatopoetic until Tsubouchi makes it so.\u00a0<em>Popo<\/em>\u00a0itself is a wordless word, it is the seed of a word, a seed which bursts into flame as soon as it is spoken. Imagine a great gust of wind.
