As if releasing a\u00a0new issue\u00a0weren\u2019t exciting enough, this month marksour fifth<\/em> anniversary<\/strong>\u2014to celebrate, we\u2019ve put together a special edition you won\u2019t want to miss!<\/p>\n

First off, we\u2019re thrilled to feature exclusive interviews with Junot D\u00edaz<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>andYann Martel<\/a>,<\/strong> a passage from Sybille Lacan\u2019s fractured memoir of her larger-than-life\u00a0father Jacques Lacan<\/strong><\/a>, plus early poems by the\u00a0„Allen Ginsberg of\u00a0Japan,”\u00a0Kazuko Shiraishi<\/a><\/strong>, and an anagrammatic translation by Bronwyn Haslam<\/a> <\/strong>in our special feature on\u00a0Experimental Translation, which reveals previously hidden meanings in texts both familiar and almost forgotten.<\/p>\n

Other highlights include a mythical, waterlogged coming-of-age story by Sinophone Malaysian novelist Kuei-hsin Chang<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and an interview with the\u00a0genre-shattering artist Caroline Bergvall<\/strong><\/a>. We also feature our first work from Mongolia, Uzbekistan, and ancient Babylon, bringing our country\u00a0tally up to 100!<\/p>\n

A dandelion, once it has d(r)ied, is held together by a preponderance of parachute pods. They part and pop, as fire does, in play and on the planes of prairied minds. The\u00a0tanpopo<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0popo<\/em>\u00a0is the dandelion\u2019s lion, but it is also the pop of Pop-Rocks, the pip of pomegranate, the chugga chugga of the choo-choo. A train engineer is a\u00a0popo-ya<\/em>,\u00a0shushu-popo<\/em>\u00a0the child\u2019s word for locomotive,\u00a0popo-popo-popo<\/em>\u00a0the sound a train makes moving across an empty field. A 1603 Jesuit Japanese dictionary lists\u00a0poppo<\/em>\u00a0as \u201cthe manner in which steam or fire rises.\u201d But in Japanese,\u00a0tanpopo<\/em>\u00a0is not onomatopoetic until Tsubouchi makes it so.\u00a0Popo<\/em>\u00a0itself is a wordless word, it is the seed of a word, a seed which bursts into flame as soon as it is spoken. Imagine a great gust of wind. Imagine a fire.<\/p>\n
