In Retreat by Alexis C. Drăculea is a Christmas gift that Contemporary Literature Press makes its readers. The graduate students of MTTLC have been working on its English version for two years.
Alexis V. Drăculea is a pen-name for Mihail C. Vlădescu, lawyer, soldier in World War I, Member of Parliament, journalist and writer. He was born in 1886 and died when he was only 45 years old. C. George Sandulescu explains in his introductory study the writer’s place in the family of the Romanian philosopher Constantin Noica.
This book of „war stories” was published at the end of the war, in 1918. Like Vlădescu’s other seven books – prose, theatre plays and military strategy, it is unknown to the Romanian readers, in spite of the fact that major Romanian libraries carry it. By translating it into English, we are bringing to light a writer who deserves to be read.
Behind the simple plots of war, love and money, these short stories hide a real treasure of thought, of concentraded style, and dramatic approach. Considering that Mihail C. Vlădescu was born four years after James Joyce and two years before T.S. Eliot, it becomes apparent, we think, that Contemporary Literature Press is once again focusing on Modernism.
