Contemporary Literature Press is publishing in both English and Romanian Zamolxe / Zalmoxis, written by the Romanian poet Lucian Blaga in 1921. It is a dramatic poem, and its subtitle is „A Pagan Mystery”.
There are several reasons why we have chosen to publish Blaga’s poem in English.
First of all, it was translated by a very gifted Romanian philologist, born in America. Doris Plantus is a writer herself, and not long ago we published her cosmogonic story The Hermit.
On the other hand, Blaga’s poem was published just one year before James Joyce’s Ulysses, and T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land.
Even though Modernism was in full swing, Blaga chose to write a poem about Dacian monotheism and the cult of Zalmoxis.
Last but not least, besides being a writer, Lucian Blaga was also a philosopher, academic, diplomat and member of the Romanian Academy-until he refused to support communism, and was demoted to the position of a simple librarian.
While speaking about the remote times of the Getae, of Dacians, and of Zalmoxis-the god that was twice denied by his people-, this book is also a prefiguration of its author’s fate.

Contemporary Literature Press publică în limbile engleză și română poemul dramatic Zamolxe. Mister păgân, scris de Lucian Blaga în anul 1921.
De ce am ales oare să publicăm în traducere engleză tocmai acest poem de Blaga?
În primul rând pentru că el a fost tradus în limba engleză de către Doris Plantus, scriitoare româncă născută în America. De curând am publicat și o istorisire cosmogonică scrisă de aceeași Doris Plantus: The Hermit.
În al doilea rând, nu este lipsit de importanță faptul că poemul lui Blaga a apărut doar cu un an înaintea celor două cărți prin excelență moderniste: Ulysses de James Joyce și The Waste Land de T.S. Eliot.
Este de remarcat că, într-un moment când modernitatea se afirma cu mai multă putere ca oricând, Lucian Blaga a ales să scrie despre monoteismul dacilor și despre zeul lor, Zamolxe.
Scriitor, filosof, universitar, diplomat și membru al Academiei Române, Lucian Blaga nu a acceptat niciodată comunismul, iar sistemul, la rândul lui, a făcut din el un simplu bibliotecar.
Cartea pe care o publicăm acum și care povestește despe geți, despre daci și despre Zamolxe-zeul renegat de două ori de poporul lui-este o prefigurare, într-un fel, a lucrurilor care i s-au întâmplat autorului însuși.
